World Music Awards

What has happened to the World Music Awards?? Years back, they were taped in the Spring and aired on ABC (back in 1993, I knew what the kid accusing Michael Jackson of child molestation looked like because I put it together that he was the kid who Michael had sitting on his lap during the World Music Awards ceremony that year--!). The show was always fun to watch, to me, because I got to see and hear what was going on in pop music all over the world (the name really isn't a misnomer).

It was how I found out--before "Can't Get You Out of My Head"--that Kylie Minogue might have been a one-hit wonder here in the USA, but she was actually still recording and was one of the biggest recording acts in the world everywhere else (Kylie opened the show a few years ago with "Can't Get You Out of My Head"--and I really almost lost it when the chords to New Order's "Blue Monday" suddenly showed up! I wasn't quite up on the mashup deal yet, so I was very pleasantly surprised to hear two of my favorite dance songs ever put together like that!) Through the World Music Awards throughout the years, I've been able to find out early--or at all--about Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Tina Arena, Lara Fabian, Laura Pausini, and have been able to see Aqua, Eiffel 65, and David Bisbal live in performance, away from their fairly campy music videos.

The ones for 2006 were filmed back in November of 2006 and are airing tonight in syndication--here in Chicago, they're on right now on Channel 50, having begun at 11:00 pm--?! What has happened??

I mean, yes, there've always been artists who didn't sing in English--which ABC usually chopped up together in a blurry montage (but that's another rant altogether). I guess ABC didn't want to take the chance this year. And none of the other networks wanted to touch them, either.

Maybe it's because of Michael Jackson--? But almost every year the World Music Awards and its live audiences have lived, cried, and died for MJ--I am so not exaggerating!--and I swear the cheers have been louder and crazier ever since the allegations in 1993, ironically enough. Wasn't a problem before.

I have to admit I was worried when I heard Lindsay Lohan was hosting (shudder). And my fears were hardly allayed when the little red carpet montage at the beginning of the show kept featuring Paris Hilton (shudder and gag). But so far it's been a pretty good show. Beyonce opened with "Deja Vu" and did "Irreplaceable" later on in the show, and came back yet again to present the Diamond Award to MJ (Michael likes awards). Chris Brown re-created the "Thriller" video on stage, complete with zombie dancers and insipid Ola Ray stand-in.

And away from the MJ-ness--After nearly two decades of being a fan, I finally got to see Enya perform live! Wow!!

Well, we'll see what happens next year...!

Kylie: Remember her as Cammie in the movie "Street Fighter"? And who could forget her remake of "The Locomotion"? If I never here that song again, it will be too soon.

Enya: You saw her live??? [insert much jealousy here]

YAGH! Kylie's in the "Street Fighter" movie?! I never saw the movie 'cause Raul Julia just looked so bad in the previews... But I thought Kylie's only movie was as the green fairy in "Moulin Rouge." I know she did Australia's huge soap opera, "Neighbors"... whatever that is! In any case, I could not stand "The Locomotion" either--and the only thing worse than the song was the music video!

Enya was so cool. She sang some lines live alone, and then her multi-multi-multi-layered tracks would come in. She was backed by all these violin players and harpists. She sang her new single, "It's in the Rain."

And the performance was kinda like this one here on YouTube--at http://youtube.com/watch?v=GIi3Vy2A6ZU--although about half of the violin and harp musicians (all female!) that were there are with her here on this morning talk show performance from England. And there was no TalkShowDrone asking too many dang questions about Michael Jackson!
